SMMAS History

St. Margaret Mary Alacoque School was established in September 1951 in the Los Angeles County suburb of Lomita.  From 1953 to 1986 the school was staffed mainly by the Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco.  Also serving the school in the late 1970’s to the mid 1980’s in a teaching capacity were the Sisters of Charity of Rolling Hills.  Since 1986, the faculty, staff, and principal have been made up entirely of lay teachers. 

St. Margaret Mary Alacoque School is fully accredited with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. 

The school currently serves approximately 200 students in grades TK-8 from throughout the entire South Bay region, including students from Lomita, Torrance, Wilmington, San Pedro, Harbor City, Carson, and Gardena.

The St. Margaret Mary Alacoque School tradition is strong with a large number of parents and grandparents who are SMMAS graduates. 

About 90%

of the graduates from St. Margaret Mary continue their education at area Catholic High Schools.  The catholic high schools most attended are Bishop Montgomery, Saint Anthony, Saint John Bosco, Saint Joseph, Mary Star of the Sea, and Loyola.
